Abdullah Al-Washmi, secretary general of the King Salman World Academy for the Arabic Language, told Arab News that the academy aims to become a global reference resource for the language by providing the tools necessary to promote, teach, learn and encourage the use of Arabic, in accordance with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and its Human Capacities Development Program.

Part of the academy’s strategy is to focus on accelerating the pace of technical research in various fields related to the Arabic language, using AI tools to facilitate understanding, he added. .

AI has become a major catalyst for language teaching and learning, Al-Washmi said, helping to provide multiple learning models that enable students to learn Arabic in ways that are appropriate for their needs. He added that they can choose the form and level of education that works best for them, as well as the specific area in which they intend to use the language, and the AI ​​will tailor the experience of each student’s learning about their unique needs by helping to identify and address weaknesses and build on strengths.

“As for Arabic speakers, AI helps them develop their skills by providing tools to learn Arabic grammar in a different way than taught in traditional books,” Al-Washmi said.

In addition to teaching the language to young people using techniques and pedagogical methods adapted to their needs, AI also allows students to choose the method by which they wish to learn, such as simulation, dialogue or others. methods they might prefer. “

AI delivers amazing solutions thanks to the high-performance devices it runs on and the amount of data it can process, he added. For example, it can help people learn Arabic and develop reading skills by automatically identifying and correcting pronunciation, assessing current reading level, and helping to control reading, speaking and speech speed. ‘listen. It can also help develop writing skills by correcting spelling, grammar, semantics, and generating full sentences.

AI can help improve speaking and listening skills through intelligent dialogue systems, Al-Washmi said. It also allows users to explore other linguistic areas such as summarizing, translating, improving searches, detecting fraud, plagiarism and rumors, identifying hate speech and answering questions. All of these contributions are brought together in a science called natural language processing, or computational linguistics, which brings together specialists in AI and linguistics.

Speaking about modern ideas for teaching Arabic through AI, he said the use of robots has been widely acclaimed in educational circles in many parts of the world. These robots provide almost limitless opportunities for students to think, design, implement their ideas, employ scientific principles, and conduct research.

AI helps make robots smarter and more efficient at communicating, following instructions, answering questions, teaching lessons, and performing some Arabic customs that Arabic language students sometimes need to know to help them learn, a said Al-Washmi.

He added that the virtual world offers opportunities to facilitate the teaching and learning of Arabic and make the educational experience more exciting and enjoyable. It also allows students to fully immerse themselves in Arabic-speaking virtual environments.

The academy recently entered into an agreement with THIQAH Business Services to develop applications for the Arabic language by creating linguistic data sources and archiving and analysis tools and making them available to academics, experts and students. This project aims to increase knowledge and awareness of the Arabic language and improve the quality of published Arabic content.
