Arabic Language Center Abu Dhabi’s publishing industry forum explores the future of the sector and growth prospects

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The Arabic Language Center Abu Dhabi (ALC) hosted the inaugural Publishing Industry Forum, an event for the Emirates Publishers Association, at the St. Regis Abu Dubai the DATE. The forum aimed to support Arabic language promotion and Arabic content creation efforts, and showcased local and international ALC publishing projects as well as its initiatives to support Emirati publishers.

The event brought together His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Tamim, President of the ALC, Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Acting Executive Director of the ALC, and His Excellency Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association, as well than 50 Emirati publishers. specialists in children’s and young adult literature, publishers of e-books and audiobooks, literary agencies, professionals in the copyright trade and translators, in addition to representatives of the various departments of the ALC.

Al Tunaiji said, “The publishing industry has faced many challenges in recent years, which has compelled stakeholders and relevant authorities to mobilize their efforts and clearly define the future of the industry. The Arabic Language Center Abu Dhabi is committed to developing systems for the publishing industry locally and internationally, providing support to writers and publishers, and promoting their work in global markets. The Publishing Industry Forum with the Emirates Publishers Association is a continuation of these efforts, helping to strengthen communication between industry players so that stakeholders can stay abreast of developments and address any challenges that may arise.

Rashid Al Kous said, “This forum has given the global publisher community a significant new opportunity to present recommendations that they believe will fuel the efforts needed for modern technology adoption to continue to grow and advance. our industry. Forum participants in our region can leverage and personalize recommendations to benefit their businesses while diversifying their content into e-book and audiobook formats, especially in the genres for children and young adults, as these are become central topics of discussion with translations, book marketing, fairs and festivals.

The Arabic language will always be the primary means of transmitting our deeply rooted history and cultural identity, while also serving as a protector of our identity for generations to come. Therefore, the role that Emirati and Arab publishers play in achieving these goals cannot be overemphasized. Through their contributions, they are transforming the local and regional publishing industry into an inclusive cultural ecosystem that continuously promotes learning among Arab readers in their native language..”

The forum assessed the current state of the Emirati publishing industry and the challenges it faces, highlighting the aspirations of publishers and their proposed solutions to problems in the sector. The event highlighted the role of book fairs and their impact on the industry, with attendees exploring ways to revamp the professional program of the 2023 Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and discussing prospects for the development of the Al Dhafra Book Fair.

Other topics of discussion included modern marketing mechanisms and the multitude of channels for print, digital and audio publications. The forum also highlighted the results of the first International Congress of Arabic Publishing and Creative Industries, as well as the successes of ALC’s regular participation in various international book fairs.
