Emirates News Agency – Historical corpus of the Arabic language presented at the London Book Fair

SHARJAH, 8th April, 2022 (WAM) — Underlining Sharjah Emirate’s eager pursuit of cultural projects, the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) Sharjah has presented the “Arabic Language Historical Corpus” during the 49th edition of the London Book Fair where Sharjah was celebrated as a Market Focus.

ALA embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to support and protect the Arabic language, one of the main pillars of Arab civilization.

The first 17 volumes of the Corpus, which have already been launched, were exhibited in the Market Focus pavilion in Sharjah. The Corpus is part of Sharjah’s integrated cultural project and underlines the emirate’s commitment to collaborating with Arabic language academies in the Arab world.

The Historical Corpus of the Arabic Language is the first project of its kind to chronicle 17 centuries of development of the Arabic language, and it provides vital information on the history of the Arabic lexicon.

The Historical Corpus site offers scholars, linguists, researchers and language enthusiasts around the world access to thousands of books, manuscripts and resources, some of which are available online for the first time. It is a huge digital library that includes books from literature, poetry, philosophy, language, and other disciplines.
